NCI-Designated Cancer Centers Public Affairs Network
With the passage of the National Cancer Act in 1971, Congress formally
recognized the need for an interdisciplinary approach to cancer treatment,
research, and education. The resulting Cancer Centers Program now supports
a total of 57 centers nationwide.
In 1990, public affairs officials at the nation's comprehensive cancer
centers formed a cooperative network. The next year the network expanded
to include representatives from all the cancer centers in the program.
The mission of the network is to share information and resources among
the public affairs programs of the centers and to develop unified positions
on critical issues of common concern, when appropriate. In addition, the
network seeks to enhance public understanding of the nation's cancer research
effort and works closely with the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Office
of Cancer Communications to further public awareness of cancer prevention,
detection, and treatment.
