John Hunter (1728-1793)
Hunter, the preeminent British surgeon of his day, believed there were three main causes of cancer: age, hereditary disposition and perhaps climate. According to Hunter, the cancerous age was from 40 to 60 in both sexes, and cancer was seldom found in the very young or very old. Library of Congress
