Lydia Woods Schindler

A lifetime member of the National Association of Science Writers, Lydia Woods Schindler began her career as a reporter for medical news magazines in Chicago and New York. When her daughters were small, she turned to free lance reporting, writing, editing, and radio broadcasting. A move to Washington, DC expanded her professional horizons to include coverage of health-related congressional hearings and government agencies as well as research advances at Federal and area medical institutions. She has addressed a broad variety of medical topics; in addition to immunology and genetics, these include heart disease, tropical infectious diseases, medical history, and human embryo research. She has authored a variety of publications for NCI, including the award-winning Understanding Breast Changes: A Health Guide for All Women. Her books include The Breast Cancer Digest, a resource for health professionals, and a history of the Washington Hospital Center. She has contributed to NIH Consensus Conferences, publications of the National Academy of Sciences, reports of the Surgeon General, and the Federal Government's Report on Three-Mile Island. Once a Fulbright Scholar in France, Lydia today leavens her workload with an avid interest in birding.
