Lewis J. Kleinsmith, Ph.D

Lewis J. Kleinsmith is a Professor of Biology at the University of Michigan, where he has served on the faculty since receiving his Ph.D. from Rockefeller University in 1968. His extensive teaching experience—which has included courses in introductory biology, cell biology, and cancer biology—has earned him several citations for outstanding teaching from the Michigan Students Association. His research interests have included studies of gene expression during development, the role of protein phosphorylation in eukaryotic gene regulation, and the control of growth and gene expression in cancer cells. Among his numerous publications, he is co-author of two major textbooks, Principles of Cell and Molecular Biology and The World of the Cell, and has written several award-winning educational software programs. His interests in communicating about scientific issues to the general public have led to his being awarded a Golden Apple Award from the Ann Arbor Public Schools, a Michigan Science and Technology Quest Award from the Michigan Technology Council, and a Certificate of Appreciation from the Governor of Michigan. His other honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Henry Russel Award, a Michigan Distinguished Service Award, a Thurnau Professorship, and a Best Curriculum Innovation Award from the EDUCOM Higher Education Software Awards Competition.
