The Varmus Lab is a part of the Division of Basic Sciences within the National Cancer Institute of the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. Established in 1994, the Lab has used biochemical, genetic, and molecular approaches to understand the normal and oncogenic properties of several genes implicated in neoplasia.

Effective January 1, 2000, Dr. Varmus assumed the role of President of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, where he is also the Head of a research laboratory within the Sloan-Kettering Institute.  Although the majority of his lab’s research effort is now at MSKCC, Dr. Varmus, as a Special Volunteer in the NCI, will continue to maintain a research lab at the NIH through the Summer of 2001
