Outreach

Dr. McNally is one of the organizers of a light and fluorescence microscopy tutorial for researchers at NIH. This tutorial is being designed to introduce novices to the research questions that can be addressed by light microscopy. Topics to be discussed include transmitted light microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, digital imaging, confocal microscopy and deconvolution. We plan a day long course that will be given twice a year. The first session is planned for the summer of 2000.

Dr. McNally and Dr. Tilmann Brotz (NCI Experimental Immunology Branch Microscopy and Digital Imaging Facility) have established a microscopy interest group on the NIH campus. This group is composed of over 50 individuals from around the campus with interests in light microscopy. At monthly meetings members describe how they are using a particular microscopy technique to address biological research problems. See the interest group web page for more details.

Facility tours are available. Previous tours have included introductory demos of modern fluorescence light microscopy for elementary or high school students. Tours are generally arranged as part of a larger program through the NCI's Division of Basic Sciences Office.
