NCI Statement: High-Dose Chemotherapy/Bone Marrow Transplant Studies for Breast Cancer 
(3/10/99)


The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is sponsoring studies of the effectiveness of high-dose chemotherapy and autologous bone marrow or stem cell transplantation in the treatment of breast cancer. Preliminary results of two of these will be presented at the May meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The results of two similar foreign studies will also be presented at the meeting.

NCI Issues Clinical Announcement on Cervical Cancer: Chemotherapy Plus Radiation Improves Survival

Tobacco Research Implementation Plan: Priorities for Tobacco Research Beyond the Year 2000

Tobacco-related cancers exact an enormous toll on the Nation’s public health. More than 30 percent of all cancer deaths are caused by tobacco use. The Tobacco Research Implementation Plan is the product of a 7 month process of fact-finding and deliberation by leading scientists within and outside the NCI. It will guide the implementation of a program of tobacco-related research which will help to reduce the sizable health toll caused by tobacco use.


Rapid Access To Intervention Development "RAID"

RAID is a new program designed to facilitate translation to the clinic of novel, scientifically meritorious therapeutic interventions originating in the academic community. It will do this by making available to the academic research community, on a competitive basis, NCI resources for the pre-clinical development of drugs and biologics. National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine (IOM) Releases Report on Exposure to I-131 Fallout during Nuclear Testing

Following up on the 1997 NCI study of American's exposure to I-131 from atomic bomb test fallout, the IOM has released a report assessing medical and public health implications of the study. The IOM report also provides recommendations for education and clinical practice. Information about this report is available on the National Academy of Sciences Website.

NCI Announces the Availability of the Prostate Cancer Progress Review Group Report and the Breast Cancer Progress Review Group Report

NCI Announces the Unconventional Innovations Program

The Unconventional Innovations Program (UIP) will implement a new approach to funding the development of high impact, long range technologies to support cancer research. The UIP will focus on the development of technology platforms that can couple the relatively non-invasive sensing and signaling of specific molecular alterations in patients with capabilities for controlled and monitorable intervention specific for these molecular alterations. Ideas from researchers will contribute to the general scope of a Broad Agency Agreement (BAA) to be issued in late 1998 or early 1999.

New Report on Cigar Smoking Released by NCI

A new NCI report, Cigars: Health Effects and Trends, shows that daily cigar smoking causes cancers of the the lip, tongue, mouth, throat, larynx, esophagus, and lung, as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary (lung) disease and coronary heart disease. 


Breast Cancer Prevention Trial Shows Major Benefit (4/6/98)


Six Years after its inception, the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (BCPT) shows a 45 percent reduction in breast cancer incidence among high-risk women who took tamoxifen.

Cancer Incidence and Death Rates Decline
(3/12/98)


Cancer incidence and death rates for all cancers combined and for most of the top 10 cancer sites declined between 1990 and 1995, reversing an almost 20-year trend of increasing cancer cases and deaths in the United States. A scientific paper on the topic, "Cancer Incidence and Mortality, 1973-1995" was published in the March 15, 1998 issue of CANCER
